STORYTELLING/STORYTELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
 (A Two Day Intensive Workshop)
NYU Steinhardt School of Education, Program in Ed. Theatre
Ed.theatre@nyu.edu
In this highly participatory and fun class, we work with personal and
traditional stories, discover methods to quickly learn and tell stories, practice a
variety of activities to use with students in the classroom, and learn some
history and theory.

Storytelling has been used by teachers in all cultures and all epochs to
actively engage students in learning. Both cognitive and social skills are taught
and reinforced, multiple intelligences are engaged, and curricular content
and the “Standards” are supported. And it is fun!mailto:Ed.theatre@nyu.edu?subject=Storytelling%20Workshopshapeimage_7_link_0

INTO THE CORE OF THE STORY: NO GIMMICKS AND NO APOLOGIES NEEDED!

New Jersey Storytelling Guild; the Vincent Building, to the right of the
Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., Upper Montclair NJ
http://www.njstorynet.org/

Storytelling is one of the oldest and purest art forms. It is about direct communication from teller to listener. No costumes, no sets, no fourth wall. There is nothing to hide behind. There is the story, the teller, the listeners, and the interplay between them. Sounds easy, doesn't it! It is, if you stay true to yourself, to the story, and to your audience.

Award winning storyteller Regina Ress will share some stories and some thoughts on the mysteries and delights of this most ancient and most contemporary art, storytelling. She will tell some stories, answer questions, share some of her process and engage participants in some fun activities to get the storytelling juices flowing. She will have just returned from Guatemala and Peru...and probably will have some stories!

Arts & Technology in the ESOL Classroom
     1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Many funding streams mandate fusing ESOL/Literacy instruction with broader content, including technology. This workshop focuses on teaching language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, functions, vocabulary, grammar, etc) and computer skills (Internet browsing for research, website navigation) while exploring the arts. The arts can enhance the practice of foundational skills while encouraging cross-cultural awareness and personal expression. They engage the “whole learner” and the “multiple intelligences.” They make teaching and learning fun!
